Exhibition Introduction:
The "Mapping Taste" art project originates from Zhao Ruo-Tong's longing for a mango tree in Manila. Carrying this taste memory blended with joy, loss, and sorrow, during her residency in the UK, she invited strangers to teach her how to cook a dish related tomangoes, unfolding cross-cultural and cross-border dialogues at one dinner table after another.
Memories belonging to the tropics emergein the ingredients. Zhao Ruo-Tong and the participants enter each other's pastlives, collectively consuming the emotions and memories embedded in the dishes, as well as the confusion of immigrants and travelers hovering between identities and standing in gray areas. The juice of the mango traces paths of migration, while also revealing how the mango tree, under colonial history, circumnavigated the globe. The emotional maps stacked and constructed on the dinner tables ultimately intertwine into a question about "HOME."
This exhibition is regarded as an ongoing project. In addition to presenting the works, it also invites audiences during the exhibition period to enter this space, share and exchange fading tastes and recipes from their lives, allowing memories to be served at the table once again.
Performance Introduction:
The opening performance is a collaboration between Zhao Ruo-Tong, composer Tsai Tzu-An, and table and food designer Xiong Yue-Cheng. Combining video, music, and performance, it blends visual, auditory, and gustatory experiences, inviting audiences to enter this intimate dinner moment. Follow the performers as they wander along the paths drawn by food, collectively savoring this map on the dinner table.
