Origin

Keelung has long functioned as a satellite city to the greater Taipei metropolitan area, with a substantial proportion of its working-age residents commuting daily to Taipei and New Taipei. As their daily lives have shifted elsewhere, so too has their sense of belonging to, and cultural identification with, this city. Even for those who live here, Keelung has increasingly become a place of unfamiliarity and detachment. This project, The Shape of Keelung Vol. 1: Anle Sampling, is conceived as the first step in an ongoing urban cultural sampling initiative, aiming to address this vacuum by helping residents move from the mindset of passing visitors to that of active narrators of their own city.

Keelung's streetscapes carry no shortage of negative associations, yet the city's aesthetic character is, in fact, remarkably distinctive. Spatially, the pressure exerted by mountain and sea has produced a landscape of vertical stratification; temporally, successive layers of history — Qing, Japanese colonial, post-war and contemporary — are superimposed within the same city blocks, forming a visual language that is dense and dimensional, yet easily overlooked. The difficulty is that residents have never been given a method for identifying and interpreting this urban texture that surrounds them.

As an arts practitioner living and working in Keelung, with a sustained commitment to bringing art closer to everyday life, I wanted to use collage as the core methodology for this field investigation, guiding residents to re-read their own living environment. Collage is not merely a visual technique but a way of thinking: it juxtaposes heterogeneous materials so that meaning emerges from their collision. Keelung's urban landscape possesses precisely this quality — the historical, the natural, the artificial, and the traces of different political eras all coexisting, layer upon layer, within a single field of view. Through the lens of collage, residents can rediscover, within their daily surroundings, the cultural depth of their own environment.

As a community-based art space rooted in Anle District, CirCurate is concerned with how the city's changing conditions and the passage of time shape the way people understand and experience their surroundings. Taking urban collage as its methodological core, this project leads participants on a walking investigation, contrasting past and present within a shared "one-day living radius," gathering material along the way and culminating in individual collage zines. In this way, artistic creation becomes a public tool for integrating collective creative energy and reconstructing cultural identity. Outcomes are disseminated through photographic documentation and the event webpage, forming a cumulative local cultural asset and contributing to a wider exhibition of community co-creation.
