Urban Undergrowth
Urban Undergrowth originates from the artist Liao Pai-Hsie's daily experience of walking his dog. Last winter, he found an abandoned black dog in a derelict site. This companionship transformed the way he perceives the city.
Through these daily walks across parks and green spaces, previously overlooked plant life gradually entered his field of vision: park plantings, weeds emerging from pavement cracks, nameless plants growing quietly beside drains. These seemingly insignificant presences, each with their distinct forms, silently thrive and spread within the urban fabric.
The artist began consciously observing and collecting these marginal urban plants, translating them onto paper through the technique of burnt foil plant art. The colours generated by heat and oxidation become a language for recording botanical vitality, whilst also symbolising nature's constant state of flux within the urban environment.
Urban Undergrowth is both a depiction of city plants and a meditation on walking, companionship, and memory. The works bear witness to the routes traversed by artist and dog, transforming lives rarely noticed into landscapes seen, preserved, and remembered.
