Do you remember exchange diaries?
In the 1990s, back when social media wasn’t yet widespread, exchange diaries symbolised friendship. Friends took turns writing in the same diary, capturing everyday moments. The thrill of opening that notebook after class remains vivid to this day.
In 2024, I returned to student life in the UK and revived this ritual with friends from around the world. Handwritten words, conversations across time and space, genuine connections. Now I’d like to share them with you. In today’s globalised world, distance seems shortened yet emotional connections have grown fragile.
Through deeply personal writing, this project recaptures the warmth of handwriting and physical objects, connecting life experiences, observations, emotions and memories whilst reconsidering how to create sincere and profound dialogues with people from different cultures.
